That is why this poll exists. It is mainly intended to collect general public opinion from people in the United States about whether they want college education to be free or not.
Of course, you could say that college is already somewhat conditionally affordable in the US because students can take out loans. The problem is that these loans can be extremely large, sometimes reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars. But as far as I know, there are also different repayment conditions, and this still gives people an opportunity to receive an education even if they cannot pay the full amount immediately.
This can still be seen as a step toward making education more accessible.
If we look at many countries around the world, higher education is not actually free in many of them. Free or heavily subsidized higher education is still more common in parts of Europe, although even there, different conditions and requirements can apply.
